Modern Times

The entry of Oman into modern times began late, historically speaking, with the deposition of the Sultan of Oman by his son Qaboos bin Said al Said in 1970. The new Sultan led Oman away from the closed society which his father had practiced and still directs the destiny of the country. Thanks to enormous oil revenues, Sultan bin Said has been able to fundamentally reform almost all areas of society and modernize the economy. These areas include primarily the infrastructure as well as the education and health systems. To this day, the head of state enjoys a high reputation with the Omani population for his services to the people in opening and modernizing the country.
