Day 1 - 3

Welcome in the region of Dhofar

Welcome to the south of Oman! Arriving in Salalah, you will be met by your private driver at the airport. From here, you will go to Mirbat to your hotel for the next few days. Here the most beautiful bays of the country await you amid untouched nature. Let your soul dangle and relax to the sound of the sea.

The ideal hotel for us to start your South Oman vacation is the Alila Hinu Bay Resort in Mirbat. Set on extensive grounds and with exquisite, modern elements, it is undoubtedly one of the finest hotels in Oman. The outstanding cuisine, the spa area that invites you to relax, and the choice of pools and bays will quickly make you forget the stresses of everyday life. This is a great place to relax and wind down the first evening before you set off on your first road trip adventure through the mountains the next day.

In the coming days, you will explore the region with a guide. You will visit the Dhofar Mountains on a full-day mountain safari. Along picturesque landscapes, you will go to a viewpoint at 1700m, from which you can see the entire east coast in good weather.
On another day, you will make an excursion along the coast to Shuwemiyah. The Wadi is one of the top 10 most beautiful wadis in Oman, but due to its remote location, it is hardly mentioned in any travel guide.

Day 4 - 5

Historic East Salalah and desert magic in the Rub al Khali Desert

Discover the historical side of Salalah on a half-day tour: Driving through picturesque landscapes, you'll arrive in Mirbat, the ancient capital of the Dhofar region. Stroll through the alleys lined with old Omani mud houses and make a photo stop at an old cemetery next to Bin Ali's mausoleum. You will drive to the ancient ruins of the once-famous city of Sumharam (Khor Rohri). The city was the easternmost outpost of the Hadramaut Empire on the ancient incense route between the Mediterranean Sea, the Persian Gulf and India.

Passing the old Bedouin town of Thumrait, you will continue through the large gravel desert of "Al Nejd" to leave the paved road after about 200 km, starting in Salalah city. In the distance, you can already see the first dunes of the Rub al Khali desert. In the late afternoon, you will reach your camp in the middle of the largest sand desert in the world. The dunes here are truly impressive, and the colours of the sand are now, at golden hour, absolutely stunning for a few photos. While the team on site prepares dinner, you will experience the sunset during a walk through the huge dunes and marvel at the breathtaking view over the endless expanse on top of the highest ones. After dinner, sit comfortably around the campfire and enjoy the sight of the sparkling starry sky.

Day 6 - 10

Beach extension and discovery tours

If you want, you can get up early today to watch the sunrise. After a hearty breakfast, pack up and head back. You will reach the first attraction of today in Shisr, where you will also pump up your tires again before heading back to the paved road. The "Lost City of Ubar" has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Land of Frankincense" since 2000. This legendary ancient empire was said to have existed in one of the most inhospitable places in the world - the vast and forbidding Al Rub Al Khali desert, appropriately known as the Empty Quarter.

Afterwards, you will stop at Wadi Dawka (UNESCO World Heritage Site), also known as Frankincense Wadi due to the region's most extensive collection of naturally grown incense trees.

In the coming days, you can enjoy, on the one hand, the beautiful white sandy beach and let your soul dangle; on the other hand, you can explore the Dhofar region even further.
The west of the Dhofar region also has much to offer that you should not miss. Visit with your guide the blowholes, which let water fountains rise into the air. There are also beautiful deserted bays along the coast where you can relax and unwind.
One day, you should also visit the souk in Salalah, here you will find all kinds of incense products and much more.
